Sponsored by:

Bismarck-Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association and the National Rifle Association

Fired: March 8 and 9, 2014

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2014 North Dakota Junior 4-Position State Championship and the NRA Junior 4-Position Sectional match and thanks to all that helped me put on this event again this year. Thanks to Tim Klein, Tom and Melody Schiwal, Dave Hintz, Walt Fairbanks, Paul Christianson (art work), Joe Jarding, Dave and Mary Kay Tokach, Rich Butler and Cory Krush, and the other parents that helped set up and take down the range, score targets, post scores, set and retrieve targets and donate food (including donuts). Again, I really appreciated everyones efforts – this helps me to keep the event going (even on my time schedule) and get things done when everyone pitches in.

Congratulations to our 2014 Junior State Champion – Joe Martin. Joe fired an excellent score of 396-32x. Last year we had 5 competitors for scores of 390 or better – this year we had 6 competitors with scores of 390 or better which is outstanding. Lana Fairbanks and Joe Martin fired 100-10x prone which equal the Junior 4-Positon state record. I think this is Joe’s 2nd or 3rd time he has accomplished this.

State Championship Team scores were also impressive. The Bismarck-Mandan Rifle and Pistol Gold team with firing members Kohl Klein, Taylor Boeshans, Lana Fairbanks and Amanda Hintz fired a 1552/1600 for the win. This is an average score of 388/400 per competitor. A few years ago if you had a team score of 1500 – which is a 375/400 average per competitors – that was an excellent team score. The Forks Rifle Club fired a 1549 for a 387.25 shooter average and the Buffalo Sharpshooters fired a 1537 for a 384.25 shooter average – all excellent team scores.

In the Sectional Championship fired on Sunday, Lana Fairbanks fired an impressive 397-31x for the gold medal. Joe Martin fired a 396-26x for the silver and Mari Butler fired a 395-24x for the bronze. Lana also fired a 100-9x kneeling score which is a new state record. The previous record was 100-8x held by Kaylee Kuntz, Matthew Pueppke, Bennett Christianson and Dacotah Faught.

The Bismarck-Mandan Rifle and Pistol Gold team with firing members Lana Fairbanks, Kohl Klein, Taylor Boeshans and Jacob Langerud took the sectional team match firing a 1552-86x. In addition, the Bismarck-Mandan Rifle and Pistol Sub-Junior team of Amanda Hintz, Brady Fried, Jase Jarding and Karsten Klein fired an excellent score of 1465-41x – which is a 366.25 shooter average. This is a very good score for a sub-junior team.

Overall it was a great weekend with many juniors firing excellent scores and a lot of personal bests. Congratulations to all – keep up the hard work and don’t forget to have fun. And pass the word on to your other team members on their home ranges and encourage them to come out and participate in these events.

The 2014 smallbore season is moving fast. In just a couple weeks, it will be over. I’ve listed the remaining upcoming events for this season below. Look at your calendar, make your plans and give the match contact a call now!

Thanks to all and good shooting – Tom Thompson

Dear BMRPA Members, It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let all of you know that the BMRPA has lost one of its founding fathers. Marlin Fried, the namesake of the Fried Family Marksmanship Center, passed away this week. He is survived by his wife Leanne, children and grandchildren. While Marlin has not been active as a shooter with BMRPA for several years, we would still occasionally see him at the outdoor range in his red Chevy pickup, tending to the trees he had planted. In years before, many of you might have known Marlin from Gun City, the shop he started on Main Street in Bismarck. For those of you have never made it to Gun City, it was the type of unique gun store we don’t really get to see anymore. Not all of the trees at the Fried Family Marksmanship Center were planted by Marlin but a great many of them were. He embodied the spirit of old men planting trees which they will never live to enjoy the shade of. It was that spirit of providing for future generations and his enthusiasm for marksmanship and firearms ownership that inspired Marlin to donate the land that the Fried Family Marksmanship Center sits on today. The BMRPA, a club founded by competitive shooters coming together never had its own facility before Marlin’s gift. It was that gift by Marlin and the Fried Family that was one of the greatest factors turning the BMRPA into an organization that provides opportunities for competitors, youth and female shooters and provides a space to exercise our freedom. For that gift, we are thankful and appreciate how uncommon an act such as that is. So, Marlin and the Fried Family, we thank you! We also wish to express our condolences to the Fried family for their loss during this sad time. A memorial service will be held at 11:30AM on Monday, January 19, 2026, and visitation will be held Sunday, January 18, at 5:30PM at Bismarck Funeral Home, and 7pm prayer service. https://www.bismarckfuneralhome.com/obituaries/marlin-fried Tom Headrick President, BMRPA
