Mark Metz 1911 Mini Match

Introducing, the Mark Metz 1911 Mini-Match, featuring 1911s only (well, unless you only have a 2011)

It is the pistol most of us own, has a super cool history, and sadly for most of us, carries more dust than recent memories. So, here is a chance for all of us to break out our favorite gun that we rarely shoot.

* We’ll treat this as a match, but it will be far more casual than a traditional match. Consider it to be more like a car show where we get to check out 1911s and shoot them as well.

* The match will be conducted using USPSA rules and Hit Factor scoring (time and accuracy), but won’t be registered as an USPSA match. We’ll follow USPSA rules for the single stack division (see highlights below), but don’t stress about this. If your 1911 doesn’t meet those regulations, you can shoot in the 2011/1911 Outlaw division. This is just for fun.

* As time allows, we will have 3 small stages with very limited movement, and one accuracy contest. You don’t need to move fast, walking is fine. These will require FAR less quick movements than a standard USPSA match.

* This match will start after we finish our standard USPSA match. We expect to start at about 1:45 to 2pm, please start showing up at 1:15-1:30pm. This will be a short match, we’ll be done by approximately 4 pm.

* We are limiting the match to 22 shooters to ensure we don’t go over 2.5 hours. Register on Practiscore.com. Match name is "2025 Mark Metz 1911 mini-match". If you prefer, you do not need to use the Practiscore website. Simply contact Brian Stonecipher at brianstone00@yahoo.com or 218-779-7802. Cost is $10.

* For those of us that are shooting both the morning USPSA and the Mark Metz 1911 match, we will have pizza in between the matches.

* Why is this mini-match named after Mark Metz? Because years ago, single stack was a popular division and Mark showed up with his trusty 1911. Today, almost every Action Pistol shooter is running with a high capacity 9mm and a red dot. But, Mark remains loyal to his 1911, shooting 45 ACP lead bullets that also kick out a Civil War era cloud of smoke. So, here’s to you Mark, King of the 1911s.

Dear BMRPA Members, It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let all of you know that the BMRPA has lost one of its founding fathers. Marlin Fried, the namesake of the Fried Family Marksmanship Center, passed away this week. He is survived by his wife Leanne, children and grandchildren. While Marlin has not been active as a shooter with BMRPA for several years, we would still occasionally see him at the outdoor range in his red Chevy pickup, tending to the trees he had planted. In years before, many of you might have known Marlin from Gun City, the shop he started on Main Street in Bismarck. For those of you have never made it to Gun City, it was the type of unique gun store we don’t really get to see anymore. Not all of the trees at the Fried Family Marksmanship Center were planted by Marlin but a great many of them were. He embodied the spirit of old men planting trees which they will never live to enjoy the shade of. It was that spirit of providing for future generations and his enthusiasm for marksmanship and firearms ownership that inspired Marlin to donate the land that the Fried Family Marksmanship Center sits on today. The BMRPA, a club founded by competitive shooters coming together never had its own facility before Marlin’s gift. It was that gift by Marlin and the Fried Family that was one of the greatest factors turning the BMRPA into an organization that provides opportunities for competitors, youth and female shooters and provides a space to exercise our freedom. For that gift, we are thankful and appreciate how uncommon an act such as that is. So, Marlin and the Fried Family, we thank you! We also wish to express our condolences to the Fried family for their loss during this sad time. A memorial service will be held at 11:30AM on Monday, January 19, 2026, and visitation will be held Sunday, January 18, at 5:30PM at Bismarck Funeral Home, and 7pm prayer service. https://www.bismarckfuneralhome.com/obituaries/marlin-fried Tom Headrick President, BMRPA
