ND/SD State Match

July 27, 2009

For those of you that were with the Dakota RoughRiders contingency at the ND/SD State Match this past weekend in Enderlin, all I can say is thanks for coming and I’m sure you had a lot of fun. 139 shooters spent two days on ten stages of steel ringing fun. In the end, we brought home some hardware. First to Pistolero Shay and Joe Coe who shot the whole match clean, WOW! That is something to be proud of! Misty Target moved up to the Cowgirl division this year and took ND Champion and OVereall in that category. This left Striped Buffalo to bring home the Ladies Junior Championship (ND and Overall). Never a doubt and I do mean never. Not to brag, but I won the ND Gunfighter category, Dakota Maid won Ladies Senior (ND and Overall) and ND Ladies Championship for the second year in a row. CC Lakota won Senior Duelist (ND and Overall). Joe Coe won the Wrangler category (ND), Tom C took second in Senior (ND), and Blake Stone took 3rd in the 49er category (ND). For those of you wondering, this year Johnny Otter finally caught Chance Calhoun and won the ND State Championship. They ended up tied in rank points, but Johnny edged Chance out by less than 5 seconds total time. If anyone wants to see the rest of the eresults, check out the Sheyenne Valley Peacekeepers website. Striped Buffalo and Misty Target also showed they’re not afraid to run with the big dogs, as they each took home an award for Ladies side matches, with Striped Buffalo taking 2nd in Speed Shotgun and Misty taking 2nd in Speed Pistol.

Now for a little club business, there is going to be a work day at the Moffit Range on Saturday June 27th. We have access to a large loader and the plan is to move that gravel around to where it is going to be useful and to put a coat of sealer on the new stage front. As for the time, I believe that we will probably be at the range around 9:00. If it is hot, we don’t plan on working all day but we should get a few things in order before our July match. I understand that some people are not physically able to help out, but we could sure use the moral support. If anyone wants to know what to bring start with a shovel, rake, paint brush, paint roller and pan. Any one or all of these items will be helpful.

Until next time, remember I’m rootin’ for ya because we’re all in this together.

Dear BMRPA Members, It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let all of you know that the BMRPA has lost one of its founding fathers. Marlin Fried, the namesake of the Fried Family Marksmanship Center, passed away this week. He is survived by his wife Leanne, children and grandchildren. While Marlin has not been active as a shooter with BMRPA for several years, we would still occasionally see him at the outdoor range in his red Chevy pickup, tending to the trees he had planted. In years before, many of you might have known Marlin from Gun City, the shop he started on Main Street in Bismarck. For those of you have never made it to Gun City, it was the type of unique gun store we don’t really get to see anymore. Not all of the trees at the Fried Family Marksmanship Center were planted by Marlin but a great many of them were. He embodied the spirit of old men planting trees which they will never live to enjoy the shade of. It was that spirit of providing for future generations and his enthusiasm for marksmanship and firearms ownership that inspired Marlin to donate the land that the Fried Family Marksmanship Center sits on today. The BMRPA, a club founded by competitive shooters coming together never had its own facility before Marlin’s gift. It was that gift by Marlin and the Fried Family that was one of the greatest factors turning the BMRPA into an organization that provides opportunities for competitors, youth and female shooters and provides a space to exercise our freedom. For that gift, we are thankful and appreciate how uncommon an act such as that is. So, Marlin and the Fried Family, we thank you! We also wish to express our condolences to the Fried family for their loss during this sad time. A memorial service will be held at 11:30AM on Monday, January 19, 2026, and visitation will be held Sunday, January 18, at 5:30PM at Bismarck Funeral Home, and 7pm prayer service. https://www.bismarckfuneralhome.com/obituaries/marlin-fried Tom Headrick President, BMRPA
