North Dakota Long Range State Championship fired on July 10 & 11, 2010

July 21, 2010

The North Dakota Long Range State Championship matches were held the weekend of July 10 and 11, 2010. The matches were fired at the Fried Family Shooting Complex southeast of Bismarck.

Twenty-five shooters from North Dakota, Minnesota, and Nebraska fired this year’s long range events. The Long Range State Championship includes classes for both F-Class and Conventional Highpower shooters. The course of fire includes a Palma match fired on Saturday, July 10, however, the Palma course of fired is not included in the overall long range state championship aggregate score. The Long Range State Championship match was fired in Sunday, July 11. The course of fire for the long range state championship includes 4 – 20 shot strings fired from 1,000 yards. Conventional NRA Highpower shooters fired 2 strings with iron sights and 2 strings with any sights.

Saturday was hot with temps in the upper 90’s. Wind were very light, however the mirage was extremely tricky. Tom Thompson (Bismarck) fired a 434-16x (possible 450) to win the Palma Conventional Class. Brain Suhr (Page), fired a 432-16x for the F-Class match win.

A front came through Saturday night which lead to lower temps – mid 80’s, and much lower humidity. The wind picked up with gusts in the 15 miles per hour range from the Northwest on Sunday. Tom Thompson won the 2010 North Dakota Long Range State Championship – Conventional – firing a 759-27x. Brian Suhr fired a 754-13x to win the 2010 F-Class State Championship.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our 2010 North Dakota Long Range State Championship matches on July 10 and 11, 2010. Thanks to the volunteers that helped run the matches including Leon Nesja and John Hoflen and thanks to our pit boss – Earl Garbina!

The season is moving on and there are several more big events on the calendar including a Long Range Regional scheduled at the Fried Family Shooting Complex on September 11 and 12, and the North Dakota Mid-Range State Championship which will be fired on September 25 and 26 in Rolla.

Dear BMRPA Members, It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let all of you know that the BMRPA has lost one of its founding fathers. Marlin Fried, the namesake of the Fried Family Marksmanship Center, passed away this week. He is survived by his wife Leanne, children and grandchildren. While Marlin has not been active as a shooter with BMRPA for several years, we would still occasionally see him at the outdoor range in his red Chevy pickup, tending to the trees he had planted. In years before, many of you might have known Marlin from Gun City, the shop he started on Main Street in Bismarck. For those of you have never made it to Gun City, it was the type of unique gun store we don’t really get to see anymore. Not all of the trees at the Fried Family Marksmanship Center were planted by Marlin but a great many of them were. He embodied the spirit of old men planting trees which they will never live to enjoy the shade of. It was that spirit of providing for future generations and his enthusiasm for marksmanship and firearms ownership that inspired Marlin to donate the land that the Fried Family Marksmanship Center sits on today. The BMRPA, a club founded by competitive shooters coming together never had its own facility before Marlin’s gift. It was that gift by Marlin and the Fried Family that was one of the greatest factors turning the BMRPA into an organization that provides opportunities for competitors, youth and female shooters and provides a space to exercise our freedom. For that gift, we are thankful and appreciate how uncommon an act such as that is. So, Marlin and the Fried Family, we thank you! We also wish to express our condolences to the Fried family for their loss during this sad time. A memorial service will be held at 11:30AM on Monday, January 19, 2026, and visitation will be held Sunday, January 18, at 5:30PM at Bismarck Funeral Home, and 7pm prayer service. https://www.bismarckfuneralhome.com/obituaries/marlin-fried Tom Headrick President, BMRPA
