Official Bulletin – 2012 Summer High Power Matches

June 16, 2012

Thanks to everyone who participated in our 2012 Summer High Power matches on June 9 and 10. We were greeted by our usually windy conditions in the Northern Great Plains – sure would be nice to get some good weather – but this is early June in North Dakota. Don’t worry – the winds will subside by late June (just in time for our normal Northern Great Plains warm weather).

There are plenty more events on the schedule for this summer. So be sure to check your calendar, and plan to attend more High Power events this summer.

As I stated in my last match bulletin, if you plan to participate in North Dakota State Championship events, I encourage you to join the North Dakota Shooting Sports Association. In order to be eligible as a state champion, you must be a resident of North Dakota, and a member of NDSSA. Non-residents can compete in our State Championship events, and we encourage and welcome your participation. Non-residents can be the match winner however; the high overall resident is recognized as the North Dakota State Champion.

Also, I encourage you to pre-register for State Championship and Regional events. It’s been a few years since we’ve reached range capacities – you don’t want to show up at a State Championship and find out there isn’t room for you. We are working hard to get new shooters into the High Power game – so we might be filling up some of these events.

Check out the Garand Match and Vintage Military Rifle matches in Grand Forks next weekend. Contact Tom Reiten if you’re interested in attending. The High Power X-Course Regional follows on June 23 and 24. This year we’ve added a 60 shot NRA Mid-Range Prone Regional to the weekend events. The Prone Regional event will start on Saturday after the High Power Regional, and conclude on Sunday morning. This will be followed by a CMP Approved Leg match. The Leg Match is a 50 shot over-the-course event. We will try to have some State Association AR-15’s available (for a fee) for use at the match. If you can work the Leg match (and the Regional) into your schedule, please contact Denny Coulter (phone number below). Please bring your own ammo if you plan to attend the Leg match. We will try to have ammo available for competitors (also for a fee) just in case.

The next long range event will be the North Dakota Long Range State Championships in Bismarck on July, 7 and 8. This will be a 45 shot Palma match on Saturday, July 7, followed by the 80 shot North Dakota Long Range Championship match on Sunday, July 8. There will be state championships for Conventional, Open F-Class, and FRT-Class.

Thanks again and hope to see all of you at more events this summer.

Dear BMRPA Members, It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let all of you know that the BMRPA has lost one of its founding fathers. Marlin Fried, the namesake of the Fried Family Marksmanship Center, passed away this week. He is survived by his wife Leanne, children and grandchildren. While Marlin has not been active as a shooter with BMRPA for several years, we would still occasionally see him at the outdoor range in his red Chevy pickup, tending to the trees he had planted. In years before, many of you might have known Marlin from Gun City, the shop he started on Main Street in Bismarck. For those of you have never made it to Gun City, it was the type of unique gun store we don’t really get to see anymore. Not all of the trees at the Fried Family Marksmanship Center were planted by Marlin but a great many of them were. He embodied the spirit of old men planting trees which they will never live to enjoy the shade of. It was that spirit of providing for future generations and his enthusiasm for marksmanship and firearms ownership that inspired Marlin to donate the land that the Fried Family Marksmanship Center sits on today. The BMRPA, a club founded by competitive shooters coming together never had its own facility before Marlin’s gift. It was that gift by Marlin and the Fried Family that was one of the greatest factors turning the BMRPA into an organization that provides opportunities for competitors, youth and female shooters and provides a space to exercise our freedom. For that gift, we are thankful and appreciate how uncommon an act such as that is. So, Marlin and the Fried Family, we thank you! We also wish to express our condolences to the Fried family for their loss during this sad time. A memorial service will be held at 11:30AM on Monday, January 19, 2026, and visitation will be held Sunday, January 18, at 5:30PM at Bismarck Funeral Home, and 7pm prayer service. https://www.bismarckfuneralhome.com/obituaries/marlin-fried Tom Headrick President, BMRPA
